Mission & History
Our Mission
Empowering Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Our History
OSLP's doors opened in 1978 as an extension of University of Oregon. It was born as a semi-independent living program, providing various support services for adults with disabilities who maintained their own residences in Eugene. OSLP expanded their ability to provide support to people with higher support needs, welcoming those who had been displaced by the closure of Siuslaw Training Center and the eventual closure of the Salem-based institution, Fairview Training Center. OSLP was a pioneer for person-centered, dignified service in Oregon, marking the end of an era of inhumane treatment of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. In the summer of 1988, OSLP formally separated from the University of Oregon and became an independently operating non-profit organization. OSLP later launched one of the first mixed abilities art studio in the nation, OSLP Arts and Culture, which is now known as Radiant Community Arts.
Who We Are Today
Today, OSLP operates many 24-hour Residential homes and a growing Supported Living Program which serves adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities throughout Lane County. We receive referrals from community members and the county alike, allowing us to serve the greater IDD community and provide an option to those seeking high quality support.
